The town has three villages: Montgomery, Walden and Maybrook. It is mainly rural and agricultural outside the villages. Located just west of the city of Newburgh, and Stewart International Airport, Montgomery is a tourism destination with many fine restaurants, bed and breakfast lodging, shops, antique centers, town parks, museums, a rail trail, farmers markets and historic places of interest. There are a number of museums, including the Village of Montgomery Museum, Orange County Firefighters Museum, Maybrook Railroad Museum, Orange County Farmers Museum, and the Hill-Hold and Brick House Museums.
Visitors seeking outdoors sports can choose from golfing, fishing, walking and bike trails, skiing, snow tubing, and horseback riding. Montgomery is also convenient to Woodbury Common Outlet Shops, West Point Military Academy, Storm King Art Center and local wineries and breweries.
