Sandy & West Johnson have owned the Hilltop House Bed and Breakfast for over nine years. Sandy says when asked how they got interested in running a B&B, “I love to bake and fell in love with the house, and it was already a B&B” She loves to cook as evidenced by recipes on the B&B’s website and the mouthwatering photos of baked goods on their Facebook page. One of Sandy’s signature dishes is Cinnamon Smear Scones. Yum! And they both mention that their favorite thing about being innkeepers is working from home and both love the Hudson Valley because it’s so beautiful!
A great excerpt from their website about falling in love with the B&B and what improvements they have made to it, “When we bought Hilltop House Bed & Breakfast, the charm of the house spoke to me, but the coziness and warmth needed refurbishing: Each bedroom, the living room and dining room, the breakfast porch and the veranda all needed appropriate period pieces and complementary artwork and linens added back in. We scoured antique shops and yard sales, used furniture shops and the Internet to find the comfort and fixtures that really make this House a Home. Oh yes, and we didn’t skimp on new mattresses!”
In chatting with Sandy and West we asked what are some of things they like to suggest to guests to do when visiting the inn. “Checking out the Harlem Valley Rail Trail on bikes and going to eat at Monte’s restaurant”. The restaurant is a short one minute drive, or two minute walk from the inn. () Sandy has a nice blog post to learn more about Monte’s on her website: Monte’s Local Kitchen & Tap Room, a farm to table restaurant just minutes away from the inn.
Hilltop House B&B was built in 1909 and is located in Dutchess County just a few miles from the Connecticut border. Local to many area attractions including Lime Rock Racetrack, the Appalachian Trail and much more, including local wineries and local food from fine dining to casual. Hilltop House Bed & Breakfast is also just minutes from the Wassaic train station on the Harlem Rail Line. For more ideas on what to do in the area, check out the B&B’s area attractions page.
The B&B has 5 gorgeous rooms with complimentary wi-fi in all rooms, a choice of private or shared baths in some rooms and a lovely selection of antiques with lots of privacy, both intimate and elegant.
A few recent reviews from Tripadvisor gives one a great additional overview of the B&B
“Wonderful hospitality: I cannot speak highly enough of Hilltop House. Sandy and West are wonderfully hospitable and looked after my fiance and I and our two friends impeccably when we stayed in early November. The whole process from booking through arrival, stay and departure was seamless. Sandy was always very helpful and even played along in keeping our friends’ arrival a surprise. The house is a real gem and the recent renovations have made it nice and cosy. We stayed in Sunshine room which had a huge and very comfortable bed with a lovely en suite bathroom / shower which was great to relax in. Our friends were in the Firefly room which adjoins (though it can also be separated by a sturdy door) which was also comfortable. In the morning, Sandy cooked a delicious bacon, egg and muffin breakfast (included in total cost) with hot coffee which really set us up for the day. Overall, I would highly recommend staying at Hilltop House – you won’t regret it! P.S. Go to Monte’s for dinner and Four Brothers for Pizza!”
“Lovely Bed and Breakfast Getaway: Loved staying at the Hilltop Inn last month when we came for the races in Limerock. The hotel is beautifully decorated and immaculate. Our room had a king size bed that was heaven to sleep on. Sandy’s breakfasts were delicious and her suggestions for restaurants in the area, wineries and shopping were spot on. We enjoyed walking on the rail trail down the road as well as exploring the scenic neighborhood.”
