We spoke with Mile Hill’s innkeeper and owner Maret Halinen. and she shared with us some of her favorite things about the Hudson Valley. When guests ask for local places to eat, she recommends her own favorites, The Carolina House and The Flammerie in town, the Blue Plate Restaurant in Chatham, NY, Ca Mea, The Red Dot, and Food Studio in nearby Hudson, NY,
Maret, with her history in the arts, feels a strong affinity for the local art scene. A few of her favorites spots locally to send guests looking for a taste of history, are to the Martin Van Buren Historic Sites and Olana. For guests looking to combine art with some history, Jack Shainman the School Gallery, For her visitors who want an art immersion, she points to Art Omi which offers an art community with a mix of artists, dancers, musicians and writers from around the world, and offers an indoor and outdoor selection of galleries, performances and exhibits year around.
Maret has owned her inn for a little over eight years. She was originally a model in her early career and worked in New York City for many years at The Auction House Southeby’s. She moved to the country from the city to experience a bit of a different, more laid back lifestyle, and got interested in innkeeping. She is also a realtor for local Halstead Hudson Valley Properties.
The inn’s signature dish that guests always rave about, is Maret’s Finnish Pancakes with Lingonberries. They also love her Gruyere Pie! Maret truly adores the Hudson Valley, she loves the people, the weather and especially the creative people that abound in Columbia County and Kinderhook.
The Inn itself is a charming renovated Colonial Farm House. It has two bedrooms each with a private bathroom, and is located on a quiet country road perfect for those that love the outdoors. It is just a few minutes from the Village of Kinderhook, and is close to Albany, Old Chatham, Ghent and Historic Hudson, NY. The Inn is pet friendly for well behaved dogs, and welcomes children over the age of 10 and above.
The Inn also strives to be eco-friendly, with energy efficient heating and appliances and drying laundry powered by the warm and gentle rays of the sun in good weather. The Inn has instituted a recycling program, and donates gently used old towels and linens to local charities. Breakfasts feature local products when available, organic and whole grain breads and dairy products and real Maple Syrup! Maret focuses on bringing the Farm to Table concept to her B&B guests.
Some reviews from Tripadvisor highlight just how unique and charming Mile Hill Bed and Breakfast truly is:
Charming, Welcoming & Well Located…!
My husband and I enjoyed a lovely two days–despite rain and cold–at Mile Hill because Maret’s home is charming, welcoming and well located. Also extremely comfortable. It was great to meet and chat with Maret, as well, as we ate scrumptious breakfasts prepared–by hand–by her 🙂 I would definitely return there and recommend this B&B to anyone wanting a home away from home!
Hidden Gem just outside of Hudson, New York
With little notice, Maret allowed me to book a room for one night (Saturday) on a weekend during high season. This alone is nearly impossible in upstate New York. Her home is a unique property that she shares with her guests and includes a a relaxing pool, beautiful trees, and a large piece of land. Her home is filled with beautiful art and antiques, more tasteful and unusual than what you would find at most B&B’s but far beyond that and the amazing breakfast she makes herself using locally sourced products, including a vase full o fresh herbs and flowers on the table the permeate the house with wonderful smells, is who she is as a person and the exciting stories of her past having grown up in Scandinavia and lived in France before moving to New York to become a top international fashion model, then art expert. If all that isn’t enough her cat Oden welcomes you as much, or as little, as you’d like with the most heart warming personality and hospitality that we have ever seen in a single feline. We miss him still!
