Escape to Our Country Inns in the Upper Region of the Hudson Valley
Columbia and Greene County, NY make up the northern most section of the Hudson Valley region, and as such, offer the most rural retreats. Both counties are known for their natural beauty; Greene is dominated by the Catskill Mountains, while Columbia is a combination of farmland close to the Hudson River, and the rolling foothills of the Taconic mountain range on the eastern edge. Some consider Columbia County the “Napa” of the Hudson Valley as it has the highest concentration of both operating farms and excellent restaurants, operated by chefs drawn to the area because it offers them the opportunity to collaborate with local farmers and cheese makers, as well as local wineries, breweries and distilleries. At the same time, Columbia County is not a cultural wasteland. For years, artists and writers have been drawn to this beautiful countryside, and there are many art galleries in Hudson, Kinderhook, and Chatham, as well as festivals like Arts Walk in the fall, devoted to celebrating the arts. All this is within a 2 ½ hour drive from New York City or Boston, or a 2 hour train trip via Amtrak along the eastern bank of the Hudson River.
